The Home Weatherization Assistance Program (HWAP) was designed to reduce the energy consumption of Ohio’s low-income households, making utility bills more affordable. It does this by making free energy-efficiency improvements for income-eligible households. Services may include attic, wall and basement insulation, blower-door testing for air leakages and heating system repairs or replacements.
The program also identifies and repairs health, safety and comfort-related problems common in older homes often occupied by low-income families. These improvements are made with specialized diagnostic equipment during energy audits. Of equal importance is the program’s success is individualized client education. The program is operated by the Ohio Department of Development’s Office of Energy Efficiency.
HWAP Highlights*
Provided weatherization services to 338 families.
Provided maintenance services to 58 elderly and 36 handicapped homeowners, including the distribution of carbon monoxide detectors.
CAA installed new high efficiency furnaces for 15 families under a contract from Cingery to replace unsafe heating systems.
Under a contract with Cinergy, the department replaced 93 refrigerators with high-efficiency models that can reduce energy costs by up to 50%. HWAP technicians also distributed compact fluorescent light bulbs, replacing nearly 1,200 incandescent ones.
