2008 Summer Youth Employment Program

The City of Cincinnati awarded stewardship of the 2008 Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) to CAA. Through the program, CAA will place 375 youth, ages 14 - 18, in entry level jobs at community-based organizations, government agencies, corporations, law firms, health care facilities, and small businesses. During their eight weeks of employment (June 16 - August 8), youth will earn $7.00/hour for 15 hours/week.
The SYEP will provide youth with far more than a summer income. After an assessment of interests and abilities, CAA will help each youth create an individualized development plan. This plan will outline personal career ambitions and the steps necessary to achieve them. In addition, CAA will also help youth gain the skills they need to accomplish their career goals through a series of trainings. The program will provide guidance and education on topics such as: interviewing, creating a resume, developing interpersonal skills, and financial management.
Twenty-five youth will participate in Cincinnati State's Entrepreneurial Training program where they will learn the fundamentals of the free enterprise system. In addition, 25 positions in the SYEP have been reserved for youth with special needs.
To be eligible, youth must:
Be 14-18 years of age (youth ages 14 or 15 must have a work permit);
Be a resident of the City of Cincinnati;
Attend a public or private school within the city limits; and
Meet income requirements.
Applications will be available from 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. and 3:00 - 5:00 p.m. beginning Monday, April 14, 2008 at CAA's main office located at 1740 Langdon Farm Road. Completed applications are due by Thursday, May 1, 2008. The number of positions is limited, so youth are encouraged to turn in their application as soon as possible.
Information Sessions
Selected applicants will be invited to attend an information session to complete the application process. Youth who are selected to attend the information sessions must bring the following to the session:
Social security card;
State ID or student ID with picture;
Birth certificate; and
Proof of residency within the City of Cincinnati (for example, utility bill with parent's name and address).
Applicants who are ages 14 or 15 will receive a work permit application at the information session. Youth needing a work permit will need a current physical.
